One of the major challenges of human permanence on the moon or Mars is the creation of habitats and other required construction projects on distant surfaces. NASA says the process of building landing pads, habitats and roads on the moon is likely to be very different from the common construction sites on earth. One challenge will be that the robot needs to be light enough to excavate with low gravity. < / P > < p > large scale building systems can be autonomous and equipped to work without the assistance of astronauts. As part of the Artemis program, NASA has developed the concept of establishing the core surface elements needed for continued existence on the moon, which emphasizes mobility so that astronauts can carry out more exploration and scientific work. < / P > < p > NASA is considering putting a lunar rover, a habitable mobile platform, or a lunar RV into use with terrestrial habitats a decade ago. It is also investigating advanced manufacturing technology, which it believes is one of five future industries to support space exploration and improve life on earth. < / P > < p > NASA is working with icon, an architectural technology company based in Austin, Texas, for early development of space-based building systems for the moon and Mars. Icon has realized a 3D printing residential and structural community on earth and participated in NASA’s 3D printing human settlements challenge. < / P > < p > the challenge is to demonstrate construction methods and technologies that can be applied to applications outside the earth. Another government agency is also interested in technology and its application on earth. The air force awarded icon a dual-use small business innovation research contract to expand the livable and business friendly building structure of 3D printing. < / P > < p > part of the contract will explore commonalities between terrestrial and extraterrestrial applications. Icon is also investing in the work. Enough progress has been made, and NASA may give icon additional funding and explore the possibility of testing on the lunar surface.
