Hydropower stations that use the power of falling water to generate electricity are already an important part of the global energy structure, but a new study shows that they may have more to contribute. The scientists analyzed the energy potential of these facilities combined with floating solar panels, and calculated the important part of these hybrid plants that could meet the world’s current electricity demand. < / P > < p > the analysis was conducted by scientists at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the Department of energy, who examined freshwater hydropower reservoirs currently installed around the world and their potential to accommodate floating solar photovoltaic panels on the water surface. These systems can be retrofitted to allow solar energy to generate electricity during the day, while hydroelectric systems store water and energy for peak demand. < / P > < p > at present, this hybrid floating solar / hydropower system has only been installed in one place, which is a pilot project of labagon River dam in Portugal. It consists of 840 solar panels, covers 2500 square meters (27000 square feet) and is estimated to produce 300 megawatt hours of energy. Energy supplier EDP is planning to build on this pilot project by expanding a 11000 panel floating photovoltaic system at alqueva hydropower station, one of Portugal’s largest energy storage facilities. < / P > < p > according to NREL’s new analysis, this is largely just the surface that these systems can provide. The team estimates that nearly 380000 hydropower stations and reservoirs around the world can install these floating photovoltaic systems. < / P > < p > these existing substations, which will be connected to the hydropower station, can generate up to 7.6tw of electricity per year, or 10600twh per year, excluding energy from existing hydropower facilities. Given that global electricity demand in 2018 is just over 22300twh, this is a huge number, the researchers said. < / P > < p > this study highlights the potential of this almost nonexistent energy solution rather than a roadmap for its implementation. Further work is needed to assess these sites, as some may be dry at some time of the year, or there may be other factors that make them unsuitable for floating PV, but even as a spherical number, the findings are promising.
