Cowhide and leather are also bad for the environment – in addition to the effects of raising livestock, the researchers point out that the chemicals used to tanning leather are harmful and often enter the environment. < / P > < p > fungi may have mastered solutions to these problems, providing a more realistic and less harmful alternative to & quot; pure leather & quot; without paying the environmental cost of real cowhide. The leather like material has the same durability and feel as real things, but because of its more sustainable production methods, the researchers said. < / P > < p > to make fungus leather, researchers used existing by-products from forestry and agriculture, including sawdust, to grow mushrooms called mycelium roots;.
