Nowadays, it’s nothing new for the Internet and technology companies to build cars across borders. Baidu, Alibaba, Huawei, apple and so on have made frequent moves in the automotive field. On February 19, according to latepost, Xiaomi has decided to build a car and regards it as a strategic decision, but the specific form and path have not been determined, or there are still variables. Lei Jun, founder of Xiaomi group, will lead the team in person, according to a person familiar with the matter, the report said. In response, Xiaomi said in the media that it would “wait for the announcement later”, and more information will not be responded.

In fact, Lei Jun has shown his interest in making cars many times. In 2013, Lei Jun visited Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, twice in the United States. Lei Jun wrote in his official account that he had great curiosity about Tesla and its smart electric vehicle industry.

After that, through Shunwei capital, Lei Jun successively invested in Weilai automobile and Xiaopeng automobile, two new energy automobile companies, in 2015 and 2016, focusing on follow-up investment. According to the Prospectuses of Weilai automobile and Xiaopeng automobile, their shares were less than 5% when they were listed.

In recent years, the interaction between Xiaomi and new domestic car making forces such as Weilai and Xiaopeng is also more frequent. In November 2019, Xiaomi invested US $50 million in Xiaopeng through its fast pace limited company registered in the British Virgin Islands.

In addition, Xiaomi has already had automobile related patents and trademarks. Tianyancha app industrial and commercial information shows that Xiaomi Technology Co., Ltd., a domestic affiliated company of Xiaomi, was established in March 2010 with a registered capital of 1.85 billion yuan and legal representative of Lei Jun. Business scope includes technology development; sales of communication equipment, contraceptives, motorcycles, electric vehicles, bicycles and parts; engaged in Internet cultural activities.

On January 7, 2020, the company disclosed a related patent named “a method and device for automatic gear recommendation of variable speed vehicles”, with the publication number of cn106476952b, classified as trackless land vehicles. The patent abstract shows that the present disclosure relates to a method and device for automatic gear recommendation of a variable speed vehicle, belonging to the field of computer technology. By adopting the present disclosure, the accuracy of gear setting can be improved.

In June 2020, Xiaomi Technology Co., Ltd. further applied for the registration of the “Xiaomi car union” trademark and related graphic trademarks. The international classification involves website services, scientific instruments, etc. The trademark status is waiting for substantive examination and preliminary examination announcement.

Xiaomi’s previously disclosed driving point is the on-board service system of Internet of things. In June 2019, Xiaomi announced its cooperation with Mercedes Benz to promote Xiaoai, its virtual voice assistant, into the automotive human-computer interaction system.

However, people in the industry believe that compared with mobile phones and smart home products, cars are a greater challenge in terms of complexity, safety requirements and capital investment. From product manufacturing to sales channels, Lei Jun and Xiaomi need to further adapt.

It’s not just Xiaomi, but Baidu, Alibaba, etc. are also making rapid layout.

On January 11 this year, baidu announced the establishment of a smart car company. Tianyancha app shows that Baidu has previously applied for a number of automobile related patents, such as “method, device, device and storage medium of vehicle safety reminder” and “method, device, device and storage medium of monitoring driving status”. It involves automatic driving, intelligent transportation, Internet of vehicles and other fields. In addition, Baidu has set up Apollo Zhixing new company in many places, including Dalian, Nanjing, Chongqing, Chengdu, etc., and Apollo is Baidu’s automatic driving plan.

Ali is not willing to lag behind. In January this year, Zhiji auto global brand conference was held in Shanghai, which is a new car making force for Alibaba. Tianyancha app shows that Ali holds 18% of the equity of Zhiji Automobile Technology Co., Ltd.

In addition, meituan and Beibu also rely on “throwing money” to support the new forces of car building. Tianyancha app shows that from the financing history of ideal Auto’s affiliated company Beijing auto Hejia Information Technology Co., Ltd., meituan and byte are among the investors.

Didi, together with BYD, also launched a customized online car called “D1”. Tianyancha app shows that Qiu feiqu, the legal representative of Didi’s Affiliated Company Jiaxing orange Investment Management Co., Ltd., is also working in Shenzhen didi New Energy Automobile Technology Co., Ltd.

It is worth mentioning that tianyancha app shows that Gree and Huawei have also disclosed patents related to vehicles, such as Gree’s “power control circuit and electric vehicle” and Huawei’s “reducer, powertrain and vehicle”. It is understood that earlier, Huawei issued an EMT resolution, reiterating that Huawei does not build complete vehicles, but focuses on ICT technology to help automobile enterprises build good vehicles.
