The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released a final report on the settlement of the Volkswagen emission fraud scandal on Monday, saying that the affected U.S. car owners have received more than $9.8 billion in compensation. In 2015, Volkswagen acknowledged that it had installed emission cheating software in some diesel models and agreed to provide buy back or repair services to owners of more than 550000 vehicles it sold in the United States.

FTC said in its report that more than 86% of consumers who completed their claims chose to return their cars through repurchase or early termination of their lease, rather than being repaired.
